Music video inspirations:
We looked at the “Boasty” music video and was impressed by the constant camera movement and the pace that the music video has as it doesn’t feel like it drags on forever.
The transitions from shot to shot are also something that I would like to recreate and implement them into our Music video. The movement of the camera with the tracking shots moving with the characters on screen also look technically appealing to the eye especially when you pair them with the transitions and the rotation of the camera as it goes from shot to shot. A transition that stood out to me was the one where it went from the “Chicken connoisseur” to Sean Paul, and the footage transitioned out of a pack of cards. This was very creative and you don’t see many transitions like this so I would like to do something like this in our music video.
Premier Pro workshop:
Today I played around on premier pro to get used to the software so that when I come to my editing stages, I will be all set to go as I will know how to add effects and transitions. Here is an example of a colour grading edit that I did. I chose to make it an extreme colour in the edit so that I can easily show a difference between the two photo’s.
Analysing a professional Music Video:
MIA – Borders
This Music video decides to focus the video on an important issue in the world with that being immigration from war torn countries. This is a very touchy subject to talk about for some people but MIA doesnt shy away from this as she herself is a refugee who flew from her home country of Sri Lanka.
The video starts with a mid shot of MIA singing and lots of people in the background walking in a single file line. These people are refugees fleeing from their country, these people are not actors, they are in fact real refugees who are indeed escaping their country to get away from its issues. Camera then cuts to a shot of the refugees climbing over a tall fence. This symbolises them escaping and also adds that element of danger. The lyrics are also calling out political views of these issues which lyrics such as “Borders, whats up with that” and “Politics, whats up with that”. MIA is also seen wearing a jumpsuit styled outfit to symbolise how these people are feeling trapped and imprisoned. The camera also cuts to a shot long wide ashot of the refugees climbing the fence but they are positioned in a way which makes their bodies spell out the word “Life”. There is also a shot of her standing on water, this is done to symbolise her role of playing God throughout this video as she is always there on the refugees journey but not one of them interacts with her, and neither does she. The video also shows boats crammed with people on them and makes the audience realise how serious this issue is. In another shot, MIA is seen wearing a Paris Saint-Germain jersey (PSG) which is a football team in Paris, France. This is used as all of these refugees are mostly trying to flee to France and then move out from there wheter that be the UK or elsewhere in Europe. Immediatley after this shot, the refugees are shown sitting on rocks by the sea with hyperphermia blankets wrapped around them. They are gold and this is done to show the emergency crisis element with the blanket and the gold is used to symbolise the wealth of the west and they are being covered by it and ignored. This is what the artist is trying to raise awareness about.
Overall, I think this was a great music video from its objective point as it managed to not just be the video to a song but show a very real issue in the world that we live in. I would like to use mise en scene like this video has when it comes to making my music video as i think if you have a meaning or message that you are trying to portray, then it results in better craetivity which therefore results in a better, more exciting end product.
Boasty
Script
Our music video is taken as inspiration from the actual video of Boasty and it won’t be too disimilar, production wise. We want to keep it simple but effective and don’t move too far away from what the actual story of the song is about, so the locations will compliment this.
Cast:
- Thomas Capper – character 1
- Rhys Welbourne – character 3
- *Open* – character 2
- Extras – Lewis Guy, Travis Perkins, Samah Zebb, Ben Hunt, Logan Hughes
Locations:
- Tudor Grange Park 1
- Outside any Weatherspoons 2
- John Lewis car park 3
- Birmingham city centre – Bullring 4
Opening sequence:
Character 1 to run up the ramp and sit on it, Tudor Grange Park. Lip syncing the opening lines of the song *as best they can*
As the song goes on, character 1 walks off the ramp and walks in direction of the camera, *camera led*
Character 1 then proceeds to lip sync, walking towards the camera and he will have a crew behind him – Travis & Logan
The song will continue in this fashion, filmed around the skate park until *in editing* the camera will scan to the next location
Sequence 2:
Character 2 will do the same as character 1 but they will go further in terms of the way they act
Starts sat, drinking a pint of beer in the pub, showing off their non-hectic, easy street lifestyle
After taking 2 sips of the drink, he will exit the pub by a tracking shot and the character will walk the street of where the pub is with the crew but different extras behind him – Lewis & Ben
Sequence 3:
Character 1 & 2 get together and the part of the song where the line starts a MINUTE in will be a freestyle which will be left to interpretation and acted out in Solihull, John Lewis car park
Final sequence:
Character 1,2 & 3 will be filmed around Birmingham city centre
Shot 1:
- At Tom’s house, the next few shots will feature tom singing the songs first verse. Establishing shot which pans across room to tom sitting on couch this will be a medium shot of Tom sitting on couch. This will be the intro to the song. As the camera pans across the room to Tom, title of the song will pop up in text then fade.
Shot 2:
- Close up shot of Tom’s phone ringing he then picks it up and cuts to next shot.
Shot 3:
- Side profile shot of Tom on phone with the camera at a mid-close up distance.
Shot 4:
- Long shot straight up with Tom calling the camera forward. Tom says “hit it” then puts money notes to the camera which will then transition into the next shot.
Shot 5:
- One long shot of Tom walking through his conservatory to the Kitchen making it rain money on the floor. This is all one take and he will then fist bump Lewis in the kitchen and then sit on the table, look at a dictionary and look at the camera in disgust.
Shot 6:
- Lewis grabs the camera lens and pulls it towards him for his verse which will be filmed upstairs. He will be on the landing upstairs leaning by the rails. Pushes the camera away to act as a transition for when he is in Tom’s bedroom lying on the bed rapping, then sits up and Toms hand will pull the camera to act as a transition to Tom.
Shot 7:
- Tom will be sitting on his Sofa drinking champagne getting his coat on and the walking towards the door.
Shot 8:
- Camera will follow him from behind where as he passes the stairs Lewis will be there leaving the house as well.
Shot 9:
- They both leave the house with a medium shot as they walk away and the camera
Analysing music video/Evaluation:
For this I am going to compare my video to another video which is a professional video with it being OT Bop NSG. NSG videos feature minorities in their videos to support the black music industry and culture. We wanted to try and do this with our video but use white actors to show the mixing of what is considered music that is apart of the black community. Wiley, Stefflon Don and Sen Paul are artists that come from the same background. These artists have some history with each other with songs such as “Heatwave” and animal which was made by Wiley. Stefflon Don’s music is considered to be similar to other female artists such as Cardi B. Sean Paul’s music videos are up to interpretation in many of his which is something that we tried to do with our video of Boasty. He likes to feel the music and is often dancing his way through his videos with lots of energy, this is shown through NSG OT bop as well which is all about energy and feeling the music. Also in OT bop there is cuts to other locations which is something we wanted to do and it also revisits locations which we wanted do in Boasty as shown in our video where it cuts to the corridor scene and the lounge scene with the 2 actors dancing. Rap videos often have a similar format to their videos and we used that as inspiration to make our video of Boasty.
